Tried to remove a bookmark from bookmarks toolbar following instructions of using star and 'remove", it did not work, how do I do it?
Question as per above for my Firefox. I followed the seemingly simple instructions to the letter (about 6 times). The icon remains in the toolbar. However just to the left of the URL name in the toolbar is a padlock with a red stripe across it. If I click on it a message in red reads: "Connection Not Secure: Logins on this page could be compromised". Below that appears PERMISSIONS : "You have not granted this site any special permissions". I'd like to remove any sign of the thing for ever.

The star in the address bar will turn blue if the current page is bookmarked. If removing the current page bookmark has no effect on the one you see on the Bookmarks Toolbar, possibly the address is not identical or there is a duplicate bookmark for that address.
To remove a bookmark from the Bookmarks Toolbar, you can:
right-click (on Mac, Ctrl+click) the bookmark > Delete

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").
Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks and history and Cookies and passwords and cache and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.
You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.
If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.
Firefox 51+ will mark HTTP connections with a padlock with a strike through and shows "Connection is Not Secure" if you click the Control Center 'i' button at the left end of the location/address bar.
Note that this message is meant as a warning that you could be vulnerable and that it shouldn't prevent (block) you from accessing the website.
You can press the ESC key to close a doorhanger with a warning message in the name and password field.
You can disable the warning that opens when you type in a name/password field by setting this pref to false.
- security.insecure_field_warning.contextual.enabled = false
You can remove the warning in the location bar by setting this pref to false on the about:config page.
- security.insecure_password.ui.enabled = false
