There is no such thing as an excel table in email, there is in Microsoft TNEF format which incorrectly configured outlook clients send out into the world. But there is not in real internet email.

Is it an HTML table?

I would suggest you ask the sender to sends you files using the Attach option, so sending the excel file as an attachment to the email, so you can open the file using the correct program. Then you will see it as the user intended. Then you can save the file separately from the email.

As Matt states the sender is using MS TNEF format. Microsoft uses a load of formatting that is not necessarilly available in non MS products, hence why it is not a good idea to send to other users if you do not know what software they use.

The info at the following link explains things clearly and it might be a good idea to forward the link to the sender, so they can make their OutLook email client work in a more user friendly way for anyone not using MS products. Using TNEF is really for only sending to others also using MS product like OutLook email client.
