After visiting a web page, the page finds my email address and sends a deluge of product offerings. How do I prevent them from obtaining my email address from just looking at their web page?

Simply loading a web page doesn't provide anyone with your e-mail address. Common ways to get junk e-mail include

  • Posting comments or messages on forums with an account name that's the same as the first part of your e-mail address. Spam bots harvest this information. Then all they have to do is slap on a common e-mail provider like @gmail.com at the end of that, and chances are they'll reach a valid address.
  • Having common words as the first part of your e-mail address.
  • Providing your e-mail address to someone who sells it.
