Since installing the 'forget about browsing history button' Firefox automatically shows US websites instead of the previous UK ones.

The forget button is build into Firefox, however in order to make sure that there has been no changes, did you originally download the US or UK build of Firefox? I do not think the two are related, however you can change the location of search in some search preferences. This can also be triggered by you IP address.

I don't know whether it's an oversight, but according to a check done the other day in the following thread, the en-GB build of Firefox 40 has a Google search plugin directed to .com: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2954981

Maybe it was .co.uk before, or maybe Google used to redirect it, I don't know. For the moment, you might install a U.K.-directed search plugin from the following page and make that your default:
