Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox?

Are your setting intact? Add-ons? History?
If yes;
Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.
Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.
Under the page logo on the left side you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To it’s right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.
Locate the places.sqlite file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox. FF should restore the file from backups.
You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Did you go to the real profile folder with the random name?
- ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/<profile>/bookmarkbackups/
Is there only one profile present in /Firefox/Profiles/ ?
