latest version of Firefox can't make a secure connection without disabling firewall, why?

I upgraded to the latest version of Firefox and now whenever it goes to a secure connection, it either churns away and doesn't connect or says the connection was refused. I'm running PC Tools firewall and strangely when I disable the firewall, it connects. I really don't like this. I tried removing Firefox for the list of applications and re-adding it, but it didn't help.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

OK, that did the trick, thanks. Any clues as to why just removing and re-adding to the app list didn't work?
