I have recently set up TB on a new laptop and every time I open the machine and go to get my emails it's sooooo sloooow and seems to be always downloading 12 out of 18 emails to inbox or 21 out of 28 into inbox or something like that, and won't let me do much until it's finished - which can take ages. I can't make out (a) what these emails are and (b) why hasn't it downloaded them already. I uninstalled and reinstalled TB in case there was some glitch but the problem's still there. So frustrating. The setup on my other computer is fine.

I'd suggest you go to your mail provider's website, login to your mail account there and delete the offending messages. It may be that there is something odd with the last of these which prevents a complete download, which leaves the system thinking that a fault has occurred and it needs to offer these messages for download next time.

Thanks Zenos. Trouble is, I don't know whch are 'the offending emails'. They don't appear as 'unread' in bold. I also find that it's downloading sent emails now!

What is your account type - POP or IMAP?

IMAP I think. How can I confirm this?

BTW, the problem is worse than I said. When first opened, if I click on, say, a message, the 'wait' circle circles and 'not responding' appears next to 'Thunderbird' . Then I have to wait until 'not responding' goes and then clicking elsewhere may induce 'not responding' again. Eventually, things settle down and I can click where I want to without it going unresponsive, During the unresposive phase there might be a message at the bottom left saying downloading some messages.
