How do I get Firefox to allow opening of local files/folders from a link on a secure web page?

I have read a lot online telling me that Firefox does not allow opening of links to local folders or files. Is there ANY way to override this? Add-ons that claim to don't seem to work any more. Is there no setting I can change that will allow this?

Reason: We use Salesforce as our CRM and have a custom button that links to a local folder from a customer record. It works in IE - if you click the button, the folder opens. However, it has been necessary to move to Firefox, as IE no longer supports the newer Salesforce UI.
