I am reluctant to try FF7 as I had to remove Firefox when I tried to install FF6 and then reinstall FF5.

What was the problem with FF6? If it was pages taking too long to load or getting too many hangs, you could try changing the maximum number of connections allowed in about:config.

network.http.max-connections - try 48

The number in FF6 was changed to 256, and that is too many for some connection setups.
