An error occurred while sending mail: Outgoing server (SMTP) error. The server responded service not available. Closing transmission channel. IP says server OK
This error message is an ongoing problem with Thunderbird Beta. Sometimes when I try to send an email there is a couple minute delay before the message is actually sent and the message is not copied into my Sent folder, but rather it is copied into a local folder and not onto the server. The IP and I determined there is not a problem with the main server because I can send and receive test messages to myself on the IP web mail page. The issue is getting worse in recent days.

being able to send messages to yourself using web mail is a bit like walking out to the street and putting a letter in your own mail box, as oposed to going to a post box and posting it. It proves nothing at all other than the providers web server works. It is not even vaguely related to email.
Unfortunately it is also the standard of email or technical support you can expect from those 24/7 support lines ISP's offer. The folk answering are after all the lowest paid sub contracts the ISP can find.
Usually when I hear of error messages like "The server responded service not available. Closing transmission channel." it means one of two things.
1. The account is not configured correctly to contact the server. This usually occurs when the provider doe some sort of upgrade to their service and you have not made the changes they requested. To that end.
Please add the troubleshooting information to your post To find the Troubleshooting information:
- Open Help (or click on three-line-icon and select Help)
- Choose Troubleshooting Information
- Use the button Copy to clipboard to select all. Do not check box "Include account names"!
- Paste this in your post.
2. You are using a VPN and the providers server is programs to not allow connections to send mail unless you use the ISPS network to connect, the VPN effectively hiding you connection point from the mail server.

I am using a VPN and temporarily disconnected it to send some test emails and they were sent fine without an error message, so apparently the VPN was causing the error messages. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
For my information what ISP /Mail provider are you using? Interestingly I have only heard of the limitation with US based ISP's
Hi Matt, I am using Spectrum/Time Warner Cable as my ISP. Sometimes they do change their configuration settings without letting anyone know, but when I talked to Tech support everything checked out. Thanks for your help.
I am also using a VPN and now can't send emails. Error message : An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 4.7.1 You are greylisted for 900 seconds.
As I am a total techno noob and learning as I go (thank god for google) , could somebody please either assist with this problem or direct me to where I can get relevant info ? Thank you
