I am normally a Mac user, where Thunderbird already defaults to my preferred Arial font for outgoing messages. Now I am setting up a Windows 10 install for a class I need to take, and Thunderbird insists on using Times New Roman as my font for all outgoing messages.

I found the setting for "default font" under Preferences, but I am not sure what its purpose is. First, the default was set to Cambria, which was not the font displayed for anything in the app. I tried changing it to Arial and it did absolutely nothing. My incoming messages still appear how they should, in the typical Arial font specified by the sender, but when I reply, I have to manually set the font each time if I want it anything other than Times New Roman. I looked at the Advanced setting, but they made no sense to me, and Times New Roman was NOT one of the fonts selected for any of the settings.

So how do I set the default outgoing message font to something other than Times New Roman? Is there a reason Mozilla does not use the same defaults across Mac and Windows versions? Why does this have to be so complicated?

Thanks for any help, this is really annoying.

Okay, this may sound strange, but here is the real way to set fonts on Thunderbird. And I attached examples of my own setting of Calibri 14 as my default. Here goes: - in preferences>general, set you default font. - then click the advanced button. Notice the drop-down menu at top. It probably says 'latin' or 'other writing systems' - this is IMPORTANT: set your desired font settings in one, and then set the IDENTICAL settings in the other. In attached screenshots you will see my latin and otherwritingsystem match. - and, if you have account set to compose HTML, then set that in preferences>composition to variable-width and medium font. - while there, click 'send options, and check send plain text when possible (if that is your intent).

With these settings, your compose window and your sent folders will match. And if you don't write HTML, none will be sent . If you do these settings once, your font will always be consistent.
