Why does Firefox stop working after last update.
I an running Windows Vista. I have disabled all add-ons. Sometimes Firefox comes up and runs fine. Most of the time it comes up with the message that it has stopped working. Some times it comes up fine and then issues that message after running for a while. The only thing I can trace this to is an update to Firefox recently. There are 2 other users on this machine that do not have this issue. They have not run the update. I have uninstalled Firefox and re-installed it and still have this problem.

That message is usually from the computer. It could mean that the CPU is being overworked.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

This allows Firefox to come up but does not resolve the problem. I brought it up this morning normally and it ran for a while and then hung up. When I started it after closing out I got the "stopped working" message again. I then started it in safe mode and it is currently running. So basically the issue persists.
Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.
- Clear the Cache and
- Remove Cookies
Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to.
Type about:preferences<Enter> in the address bar.
- Cookies; Select Privacy. Under History, select Firefox will Use Custom Settings. Press the button on the right side called Show Cookies. Use the search bar to look for the site. Note; There may be more than one entry. Remove All of them.
- Cache; Select Advanced > Network. Across from Cached Web Content, Press Clear Now.
If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). While you are in safe mode;
Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.
Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
Poke around safe websites. Are there any problems?
Then restart.
It could be the work of one of your add-ons. Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>)<Shift> A)
In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.
Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.
If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.
Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is, detective.
I have tried all of the above with no success. There are no add-ons active there are no extensions active and no extra tool bars. Usually I can log off and log back on and FF works OK. Sometimes it works OK when I bring the system up but fails when I activate a site, like from an E-mail. I did a search for spyware and a defrag but the problem continues.
What does bringing FF up in safe mode avoid?
Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes). If the problem goes away, that tells us one thing. If it does not, that tells us something else.
Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar. Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.
Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open the Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> A)
On the left side of the page, select Appearance. Then select Default.
Now restart Firefox.
