Anonymus, UnPlug is not developed by Mozilla. It is simply an extension that has been submitted to the official add-on gallery and has been reviewed and approved as not being a security risk for Firefox.

Again, this is not about Firefox supporting specific plugin, it's about each plugin supporting Firefox. You need to ask RealPlayer developers to make it compatible with Firefox 3.6.4

to say a keyword for the original problem:

do you know what "downward" compatibility means? it means, that newer versions, which, in this case supported the latest realplayer, include the older compatibility of FF3.6.3 into the newer browser version.

thats why we are here: there was NO update of real, the FF 3.6.3 supported the plugin, but you newer version just dropped it ... thats really strange. i can understand, that, if FF3.6.4 comes out, and 2 weeks later real does bullshit on their plugin, your brower didn't spport it. okay. but the old rp plugin worked with 3.6.3 and now your newer version not. so one can say, your browser is not downwardcompatible even if theres only one microgeneration (x.x.+1) in between

okay so its not from mozilla. okay, nevertheless its no real alternative to it.

and really you expect real to make a new pluginversion for every x.x.y update you make?! only cause mozilla is not implementing older compatibility in their updates? why is the compatibility gone, ive seen nothing changed in the downloads or popups, why does ff 3.6.3 support it, and 3.6.4 not? and why does this come up so frequently?! evry second update sometimes supports it, other times not.

i think i will go that way, that i just download updates anymore only every minimum x.y or y version change.

"and really you expect real to make a new pluginversion for every x.x.y update you make?!" No, I expect them to support their costumers and support the browser their users use, that's what I expect. You don't go and complain to Microsoft if the media player (for example) you use doesn't work with the new service pack for Windows Vista or with Windows 7. It's the same exact thing here. It's a shame that it's not on a major version change, but that's how it is. Firefox is going to use the plugin-container from now on, so this is definitely something they'll want to make their plugin compatible with.

"why is the compatibility gone, ive seen nothing changed in the downloads or popups, why does ff 3.6.3 support it, and 3.6.4 not?" Please read this article.

"i think i will go that way, that i just download updates anymore only every minimum x.y or y version change." I don't really understand what you're saying here, but if you don't keep your software up to date, you'll be exposed to unpatched known security problems. Mozilla is very quick patching security problems with Firefox, whenever they are made known to them, but if you don't update your Firefox, you will be exposed. Be mindful of that when using outdated software.

i think you don't got, why the people are complaining. i never saw that on other browsers, that when a minor update came up, plugins break.

the realplayer IS up to date and supported 3.6.3 perfectly, then your company changed some things, and NOW the compatibility is gone.

i don't think real expects major changes in minor updates.

"Firefox is going to use the plugin-container from now on, so this is definitely something they'll want to make their plugin compatible with. " - now we all know what happened: you changed the way you handle plugins in a MINOR update.

and: it would have been nice if such things could be read anywhere before the update just installs itself. try to think this way: noone expects such changes in an update that installs after quitting a browser. if you make such changes that can effect plugins or other programes, make a "stand alone" update, so we can decide wether we use it, or wait until real adopted and then use it.

security omgrofl: data is going everywhere, and i dont save sensible data on my pc. and whats all secrity good for, if i cannot use the browser freely anymore?!

thats something most people forget: security and freedom must be balanced. to much security and your browser will not support anything anymore (look@apple ^^)

"the realplayer IS up to date and supported 3.6.3 perfectly, then your company changed some things, and NOW the compatibility is gone." As I said before, it's the plugins' job to keep compatibility with the browser, not the other way around.

You also seems to be misinformed as to who I am and who develops Firefox. Please see this and this.

"i don't think real expects major changes in minor updates." RealPlayer developers have had plenty of time to do the tiny alterations needed for their plugin to work with Firefox 3.6.4, since Fireofx 3.6.4 has been in testing for more than a month. And, as you know, testing is done publicly, as with all things Mozilla.

Also, Apple is hardly an example of security with anything...

In any way...

thats very interesting, why is the plugin working, but not with tubes?! if it is really incompatible, as you said morbus, with the container, why is it working on this link?

I am having the same problem.

However, I am not going to be a pain in the @$$ like everyone else and argue. There have been several suggestions made to solve the problem (although i dont particularly like UnPlug). instead of causing problems, try them.

Morbus: Although, in this case, i do believe that if people are having problems, instead of telling them to go to someone else, i would recommend just contacting the company yourself because it is more "professional". I dont know if you are an employee or volunteer but its just some advice for the future.

Keep in mind people, this is a support forum to help people solve their problems, not argue about why and whats causing the problems.

Morbus, thank you for taking your time to help, i hope realplayer updates soon in response to the latest FF because i really do prefer their service

Dillweed, I'm not a professional, remember that. Please read this for more information.

Sorry isaid 3.6.6 it should read 3.6.4

Sorry, was out of town and just checked back in! Morbus is still arguing that plug-in's are made for browsers and browsers are not made for plug-ins. But since I reloaded 3.6.3 on 6/24/10, Real Player has worked great. But now I have another dilemma, before I even came to the site my machine told me there was a new update, 3.6.6.

Am I to guess that Mozilla decided to create two more iterations of Firefox to accommodate a whole host of untold, soon to be released plug-ins just looking for browsers to be made for, or did they realize what Morbus refuses to accept, they did a bad job on 3.6.4 and then probably on 3.6.5 and now we have 3.6.6. My dilemma? Should I scurry and install 3.6.6 because of all the wonderful features it has, or be a troll and follow the threads to find out if I have other plug-ins that don't work with 3.6.6? It's rhetorical, I'll wait.

What an idiot... Tell you what anon, go try an internet explorer plugin in Firefox, and then come complain that it doesn't work! If a plugin doesn't work, it doesn't, and that's it! If it's made for Firefox, it will work, if it's not, it won't. If its developers maintain it correctly, it will work, if they don't, it won't! What freaking part of that can't you get into your head, huh?

Jeez!

Some people... If you don't like Firefox, go use something else and see if anyone cares!
