Is there an easier way to eliminate the music each time I open a new tab other than using the about.com? I am not savvy and am afraid to try that

When I want to open a new web site, I click on the + to add a new tab and loud music plays. I queried the FAQ and found an answer indicating the need to use about.com and I am not very knowledgeable about Firefox and I am very nervous about trying it. Plus I do not really understand the directions given concerning using about.com. I thought I would go into it and see if I could figure it out using the directions from the FAQ and hoping that it would be somewhat intuitive once I entered about.com but the warning is alraming to me. I hope there is an easier way to handle this. Please help

Firefox, of itself, does not play music unless you open a clip. But, an add-on might be doing this.

Please note; another user had this issue. Turned out his Real Player program was running.

Hi, you can use SearchReset instead of about:config - I think that's what you mean. But I'm a little concerned about why you are getting music at all. So if after using SearchReset you find it comes back, first Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

If it is still there in Safe Mode that would indicate that it isn't caused by one of your extensions, and may be malware, so you can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one. Windows 8 has antivirus built-in already.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Note that not all programs will detect all malware, so you may need to run several or all of them. Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

It's good to be cautious. Could you copy/paste or give a link to the directions you saw? We can review them and try to figure out whether they make sense for your situation.
