Auto deleting junk messages from server?
Hi,
I am receiving messages through POP3 service into local mailbox. I activated the junk filtering and it is automatically moving such messages to junk folder. Everthing is working fine, but, I still have to receive these junk messages from other email clients. Is it possible to auto-delete junk messages from the server side inbox, only after automatically moving them to local junk folder?
Thanks a lot. Cem

I need more information. If TB downloads the message, they are either deleted or moved to trash on server, yet you mention other email clients will receive these messages. Please describe the work flow you use, as that may help. Generally speaking, TB downloads the messages first, then makes the junk decision and stores in your Junk folder on PC. This logic takes place on your PC and not at the server level.
Hi David
I am receiving mails via POP. According to my setup the emails are deleted automatically after 14 days from the server. During this 14 days I still have to receive these junk emails from my IMAP clients. Once the TB identifies the junk mail, I no longer need to receive&see it on the other clients. I'd like TB to automatically delete the junk messages from the server without waiting for the 14 days auto-delete period, as long as the "auto delete after certain days" option is enabled.
Many thanks. Cem
The issue is POP vs IMAP. With POP, you can set to leave all messages on server, which I assume you are doing for the benefit of IMAP accounts. This setting is for when Thunderbird is retrieving from server. The 'delete after 14 days' option is for storing junk mail on local PC. The timing for the two processes is separate, so the determination of junk is after the mail is retrieved. If you access account with IMAP first, you could delete all junk mail immediately, but not with POP.
I disagree.
This is related with how TB handles the POP3 mails. Maybe I should re-phrase my suggestion: When the "auto-delete after 14 days" option is active, I need TB to delete the junk messages after moving them to the local junk folder, just like the ones manually deleted by the user. This could be a check box on the server settings near the "delete after days" check box.
This is nothing to do with IMAP. IMAP is a side issue. The other side issue is the mailbox capacity being used by the junk messages for 14 days.
Many thanks, Cem
Yes, a checkbox for junk mail to delete on server would address your concern, but there isn't one. As a support volunteer, I focus on what tools are available now. If desired, you could submit that as a suggestion at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/home An option would be to set up an IMAP account on the same PC as the POP account. Access the IMAP account first and delete the junk mail. Then use the POP account.
I see. Many thanks for clarifying that it is not possible with the existing version. I will try to create a suggestion on bugzilla site. Kind regards Cem
