Hi Qwertyy, the checkbox in the old Options page changed the setting that philipp mentioned. That is all it did.

If that old accessibility feature is not effective where you browse, the sites may have changed their tactics. This feature only blocks a small subset of the ways that sites can reload or redirect pages. You'll need an add-on if you want a more modern and complete solution.

the referenced about:config preference is identical with what was displayed in the options menu. so the answer you're looking for is that firefox 59.0.1 is the most recent version that still has the feature to warn before websites redirect.

That warning item was part of the accessibility settings in "Options/Preferences -> Advanced". When Options/Preferences moved to the new design then this warning got removed. In some Firefox versions (55,56) it was still possible to revert to the previous design by modifying a pref (browser.preferences.useOldOrganization), but this pref was removed in Firefox 57. Note that you shouldn't use outdated and no longer supported Firefox releases.

So you do not want to toggle the related Preference in about:config (which is very easy to do btw) and would rather downgrade to a older version that is vulnerable just so you can toggle this same Preference in Options instead?

Thank you cor-el, your answer was perfect.

Changing the about:config setting DOES NOT stop redirect or popups; however for some reason the older version with with the "warn me" option, stop ALL pop ups and redirects.

Could be because the notification itself must load before the site redirect, and it could be because the hijack popups are programmed to work on newer versions, but for whatever reason the old version eliminates all my popup problems and the newer version does nothing to stop them.
