I continue to receive a box offering Retry, Enter new password, Cancel but all six emails are properly connected and receive the email sent to them
My laptop ceased to function recently and I was obliged to buy a new one. If you need the info it is a Lenovo G50 operating on Windows 10. Thunderbird is still my default mail application.
I paid for PCWorld (an electrical retailer in England) to transfer all my programs and saved content from the old to the new. During the process my email address and all my saved emails on Mozilla were lost. They had wiped the hard drive on my old machine. I returned with an external hard disk where I had maintained a back up copy of my existing hard drive. When eventually Thinderbird was located and decompressed it was found to be corrupted.
It seems the assistant was under the impression that the program (Thunderbird) maintained everything in a cloud and that merely by signing in again everything would be downloaded as it was.
I have downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird again but everything appears to be different in style and content. All six emails are properly connected and receive the email sent to them. However I continue to receive a box offering Retry, Enter new password, Cancel. If I press cancel the box disappears and emails download as normal. What is the problem here?
I receive my downloads for the BT accounts from BT.com. They often download several times.
If you could help with all or any of these problems I would be most grateful.

First things first... we need to work out what is going on here.
Please add the troubleshooting information to your post, that will show what accounts you actually have as well as add-ons so we can take some educated guesses as to where the password prompt is coming from (like google calendar) To find the Troubleshooting information:
- Open Help (or click on three-line-icon and select Help)
- Choose Troubleshooting Information
- Use the button Copy to clipboard to select all. Do not check box "Include account names"!
- Paste this in your post.

Following your earlier answer I have uninstalled McAfee altogether and reverted to AVG Premium which used to work perfectly well. However I continue to get the same messages at least once per day. I also keep getting asked about compacting which I don't particularly need. It seems the message service is working adequately but these pop-up boxes are irritations.

Let me assure you in no uncertain terms. You need to compact. Failure to do so is almost a certain recipe for data loss at some point.
So instead of be annoyed, heed the urgent requests on the program to allow this fundamental maintenance before it results in data loss.
Ok I can do this. However what can be done about the Retry, New password, or cancel pop-up?
Are any of your accounts with Hotmail? I get this sort of error fairly frequently from their servers. No idea why as there is nothing wrong... Just how they manages they servers I think.
Otherwise, are you using a remote calendar? or do you have more account configured that you think?
