When i am typing a message in Thunderbird I will get pop-ups above my text suggesting words that fit what I am starting to type or suggested next words to use. How do i turn this feature off? It is similar to texting on a smartphone. Thanks in advance. JimE

The 'spellcheck as you type' option will usually underline a word that is potentially spelt incorrectly.

However, the actual spellcheck should not be auto opening until you select to open it or only open prior to sending if the option to 'Check spelling before sending' is enabled.

So this sounds like you are using an addon What addons are you using?

Thanks. The spell check seems to work just fine.

It's the pop up suggestions that drive me nuts. As for add-ons, when I go to Tools, Add-Ons, everything appears to be blank.

I have just been trying this email client so that I can shed Outlook. JimE

When you went to the add on tab did you look under Extensions?

Thunderbird does not suggest words in the compose window by default.

When I look under Extensions it says, "You don't have any add-on of this type installed. Learn more about extensions."

I concur with Airmail - Thunderbird does not do what you say by default.

Are you looking in the right place ? I say this because current versions automatically include an addon called Lightning by default. So there should be at least one. I include an image of my Addons Manager page below.

I'm also intrigued by you mentioning 'Tools' > 'Add-ons'. yes this is correct, but by default the 'Menu Bar' toolbar is not enabled and many new people are not aware of it and so locate via the 'Menu icon' > 'Add-ons'.

This then makes me wonder where you obtained thunderbird and what version you are running.

Where did you get the download for Thunderbird? This is the official site which lists all the various languages and OS downloads. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

What version of Thunderbird are you using? Help > About Thunderbird.

Toad-Hall,

Thanks for the feedback.

The version I am currently using is 52.8.0(32 bit) and it says it is up to date. It was downloaded from the Mozilla website.

I originally downloaded the latest version but it would not import my contacts from outlook 2007. After further research on the Mozilla site, it said to down load version 31.8.0 then import the contact and then upgrade to the latest version, which I did.

I did enable the Menu Bar.

Just checked again under Tools, Add-On, Extension and there is nothing there. That Lightning thing I could have disabled if it was the thing that kept coming up at the bottom of my screen and asking me to do something with it.

Thanks for trying to help. JimE

PS: is there some way to get those buttons like Delete, Reply etc to look alive instead of just black and white??
