Why are there five instances of FireFox in Task Manager when I open up one instance of FF?

Means you got malware infections or you set and saved to many homepages to cause that many pages to open up. You need to check your settings to see what is going on.

More than one process is normal for the current Firefox. http://www.ghacks.net/2016/07/22/multi-process-firefox/
