Don't know if I should use my existing gmail address or if it's asking me to create a new firefox email address. I tried the new firefox option but can't get into it to verify.

Like any site that uses passwords, they want your current e-mail address to confirm your identity. Also, if there is a login issue, a password reset can be sent to you thru your e-mail.
