Pressing "Ctrl+Z" in the search box no longer has all the previous searches. Sometimes if I recently used the search box and haven't navigated away from the page I was on it will remember my past few searches but if I go to do other things and then go back to the box, pressing 'Ctrl+Z' does nothing. The use of a separate search box that remembers your recent searches is a primary reason I use Firefox over other browsers. Yet this functionality seems to be broken. I am surprised that it has not gotten more outcry from other people who use the search box! If there is some setting I need to change, let me know, but I don't know why that specific feature would have changed all of a sudden so that it only works every once in a while.

Ctrl+Z in any text entry field makes me think of Undo (to roll back your last edit). Previously it was a shortcut for... search history? I was not aware of that.

As a starting point, which search box has the problem:

  • The search box inside the built-in Firefox Home / new tab page (you need to decouple it from jumping to the address bar in Firefox 89+ to do anything there now)
  • The optional short search bar you can add to the main toolbar (Add the Search bar to your Firefox toolbar)
  • The address bar that normally shows the URL of the current page

It is just when you have the search box selected for input (the search box, not the URL box or any textbox on a webpage) See the image. Yes, I guess "undo" would be another word for it

Oh... if I press Ctrl+Z there, Firefox types a ? character and the drop-down opens. But I don't see any matches unless I start typing some text. Previously it showed recent search history automatically without having to type any text for Firefox to match off of?

I searched for recently fixed bugs and couldn't find any related to this. Maybe someone else has an idea of whether anything was intentionally changed related to this. Or you could file a new bug:

I have this problem as well. It seems to have shown up within the last two or three releases.

I have confirmed that it happens on a new profile with no add-ons enabled.

Note that this bug likely belongs in the Search component (Firefox::Search), so the Release mgmt bot got it wrong with 'Address Bar'.

No, I think it has the correct category, the problem is not with the search function but with the undo function. As I said in the description, the search history is saved (it still shows up in the intellisense drop-down function), it is just the Ctrl-Z functionality that is broken.

Scrap that, I didn't realize that it said "Address Bar" (I could have swarm it was "Menu Bar"), I changed it to "Toolbars And Customization"

I've had the same problem since the 28th of December (2021). Couldn't find any other references to the problem, so I created my own post https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1362542 . Came here tonight to see if it has been rectified yet, searched and found Your post. My problem is still the same, Using search bar, type a search phrase, hit Enter/Return and Ctrl+Z shows nothing. I can type and delete search phrases all I want and "undo" them, but once I submit the search phrase (Enter/Return), it's like history is cleared.

Please reply to this bug list saying that you want it fixed as well so that it gets resolved as soon as possible: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1747531 The more people that say that it is a problem, the quicker it will be fixed!

Actually, spamming bugs with "me too" and "hurry up" causes them to be locked. Don't do that.

It is omre likely the opposite because you create a lot of noise and a lot of people get emails if people add 'me too' type comments.
