How do I get rid of a "sidebar" (a extra tabless website on the left of the screen) which is still there after restarting Firefox and even cold booting the computer?

I opened a website from the Library without specifying "in a new tab". I expected it to overwrite the existing active tab. Instead it opened in a half-window on the left, without a tab and without any "Min/Max/Close" icons. I can't close it even by restarting Firefox or shutting down and starting the computer. It now shows up on every Firefox screen with every tab. I didn't note the address of the site meant to be overwritten but the offending site is https://servicing.capitalone.com/c1/login.aspx.

There is an "X" in the upper right corner of the sidebar. You could replace it with another sidebar; therefore, you could use "Ctrl+B" to bring up the Bookmarks sidebar, the use "Ctrl+B" once more to toggle it off.

Click on the bookmark star to bring up the bookmark, in the lower left corner if you see the following, uncheck the box.

[X] Load this bookmark in the sidebar.

You can right-click on a bookmark to bring up the bookmark properties, uncheck the "Load this bookmark in the sidebar".

In the sidebar

  1. right-click to bring up Page Info
  2. triple -click on the url
  3. use "Ctrl+B" to bring up bookmarks side bar
  4. paste url into search, then right click on found item to bring up bookmark properties

In the Bookmarks Library List there is unfortunately no column in the Bookmarks Library List for this feature but you can click on the bookmark and the properties will show on the box below the same information, if you see a "More" drop-down there click on it to expand the properties list.

If you want to see the extent that you have such bookmarks you export our bookmarks to a bookmarks.html file then view source and use find for WEB_PANEL="true" -- I have the "Find All" extension, so I can see how many times that string occurs, and where.

It has a checkered history, but it was useful as a reference column, but it was destroyed in Firefox 3 after breaking use of in a link, breaking use, restoring use later but not for keyworded bookmarks and not for links the two places where it makes sense. It was left to not work for keywords because they wanted to destroy the keyword -- lost keyword for one year in Beta Firefox 3. Now it is to be done away with because few people (can) use it (properly), but they are going to make that check box inaccessible first -- anybody else see the additional fallacy with that.
