I updated to Firefox 44. Finally getting the Search box to appear, when I click on a link it loads on top of whatever was there before, instead of automatically in a new tab, as it was before. I can't find any setting in Configuration to specify this option. While I'm at it, the new version brought with it the very unwelcome Yahoo hijacks of Homepage and Search. Ended up having to do a Refresh and reloaded all my old preferences and bookmarks. This was not a good user experience.

Do you mean that you click a link on the Google results page?

For the Google website you can find these settings on the Google Settings page.

For the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar you can check this pref on the about:config page.

  • browser.search.openintab

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

You can check the (default) search engine in about:preferences#search (Options/Preferences > Search).

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:
