I have an older Dell computer (Dimension 4500), Windows XP and use Outlook Express for my email account. About a month ago I was no longer able to send or reply to emails, but I still receive them. We determined through several phone calls that it is not a problem with the server, and that it must be a problem with Outlook Express. I am hoping to be able to switch to Thunderbird but do not know if I can do this on my older computer. Please advise, thanks.

For it to have stopped working, it would seem that something must have changed. Perhaps improved encryption. Maybe your AV updated. It's not too surprising that your email provider had nothing helpful to say.

I am sure there is a version of Thunderbird that will work on your platform. I am not confident that the current version would work for you.

I'd suggest you try v17 for starters.

Choose your language, download it, double-click on the file you have downloaded in order to install it.

Thanks so much for your help. When you say maybe my AV was updated, what is AV? As you can see I am not computer saavy. And I have no idea how to find out if my computer has enough space for the program you mention. But I will sure give it a try. Many thanks again

AV = anti virus.
