why did Firefox automatically update to Quantum. Very clandestine and also I hate Quantum. Tried for days and still can't find all my links and data. It is awful. And I never, ever requested it, authorized it or wanted it. Now I have it, I want to get shot of it.

Why install ESR instead of just downloading the previous version, 56.0.2 (see previous message for a link)? ESR seems a considerable pain to manage for personal use, especially if you don't expect to need the older version for very long... -- jclarkw

Please provide me step by step on how to go back to Firefox ESR from Quantum? (from start to end)? (I am afraid that I will corrupt anything so I am asking for step by step.)

Other questions 1. Do I need to uninstall Firefox Quantum first, then install Firefox ESR? 2. When I uninstall Quantum, will my bookmarks/addons be uninstalled/deleted? 3. What are the things to do after installing Firefox ESR to make it look the same (bookmarks/addons...) as the version before Quantum? 4. Can I have Firefox Quantum and Firefox ESR together on the same PC? Will using them together mess up the profile or will they share the same profile (bookmarks/addons...)

will dowloading the previous versions delete my preferences, saved passwords and so on? If it does, then I'll use any other browser and ditch Firefox for good — this latest version is quite bad

I have uninstalled Firefox 57 (Quantum) and installed Firefox ESR but some addons e.g "session manger' do not work in ESR, so I uninstalled ESR and installed 56.0.2 and it works.

These are the steps I did in my Windows 10 to revert to older version. 1 In the address bar type about:preferences#general then press <enter>, then at the 'Allow Firefox to' heading select this [Never check for updates]. Unselect [Use a background service to install updates]. 2 (optional, just in case something goes wrong) Backup profile folder by following the [Backing up your profile] section steps at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles 3 In windows 'add or remove programs', uninstall Mozilla Firefox 4 Download 56.0.2 from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/56.0.2/ (or other older versions from https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/ ) 5 Disconnect from the internet (unplug ethernet cable) 6 Install 56.0.2 7 Open Firefox 56.0.2 and do this step. I have Windows7, and I want to get rid of the abomination that Quantum is. All of my add ons are gone, and I can't even view a YouTube video.

Nothing works, all my saved passwords are gone, FEBE backup is gone, along with several security things I had.

Please, can someone give detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to revert to the previous version, for a complete n00b user like me?

If NoScript is one of your main reasons for not using Firefox 57 then the author has a new update.

Well, this is not my sole reason.

My reason is that every add-on, setting, password, link, and backup is no longer there.

This was the absolute worst thing that could have been done, and done completely without my permission, and I would really like to know how to undo it.

Lancer525, you might want to try the 10 steps I posted above. I uninstalled Firefox 57 Quantum and installed 56.0.2 successfully and everything works (including addons) just like when I was using the previous version 56.0.2. Many addons are not compatible with Quantum yet and maybe that is the reason why some of your stuff is missing or do not work.

Will these same steps work? Will I still have to disconnect from the Internet?

Windows 7 should work too. You should disconnect from the internet if possible. The purpose of disconnecting from the internet in step 5 is to prevent step 7 once you open the older version of Firefox 56.0.2, it may auto connect to the internet to update to the newer version of Firefox and auto update to Firefox 57, before you have the time to complete step 7 to disable auto update. I am not sure what are the default update settings, so I disconnect internet first then open firefox to disable auto update then connect to internet.

Anyone successfully used the 10 steps in win7?

I've tried hard to get on with 57 but it is so appallingly bad in function and appearance. Pages are slow to open. Sometimes they don't open at all. Sometimes they open but the page is blank. (copy and paste same url in opera or IE it's fine.) Sometimes i have to press the link 2-3 times before it opens a tab that actually displays the page. Whoever decided that working folders should be grey?! There's not enough title bar to grab to move a window...

I'll try it again in a few months and if it's not fundamentally improved i'll go back to chrome or opera as my main browser.

I have Windows 7 and also had V.57 and hated it and wanted to go down to V.56.02 (I previously was on V.52.02 and had an issue with my profile so I had to make a change). I did not see this thread then and had figured out how to do it by reading a different help thread, and so I wanted to say how I was able to get rid of V.57 and get V.56.02 in here in case anyone is interested.

1. I first downloaded V.56.02 (had found a link in another post thread on this board but I think there's a link to the previous versions in this thread somewhere).

2. I added my extensions back in (lost them due to having to change my profile) and customized it how I wanted it to be (I have Classic Theme Restorer and Classic Toolbar Buttons extensions).

3. I went into the Options and ticked "Never check for Updates" and also unticked "Use Third Party to Install". Those settings, by the way, are in the Tools > Options > General tab...you have to scroll down a bit to find it once in the General section. Please see "Important Note" below about this.

4. I restarted Firefox and all was good!

Important to Note: I had to reinstall V.56.02 several times as V.57 kept coming back at each restart. The first time I installed V.56.02 I had changed the updates option to "Check but allow me to install if I want", and I kept the "allow third party to install" ticked. That apparently did not take and V.57 came right back.

The second time it happened, after I installed V.56.02 I looked at my updates option settings and it had reverted back to "auto update", which apparently is the default update setting, but it kept all of my other changes I had previously made, even the extensions and my theme, though I had to move a few icons around on my toolbar again which is easy to do. And again I changed the updates settings back to "check but allow me to install". But then it happened again...V.57 came back after rebooting my computer.

So, the third time I reinstalled V.56.02 I ticked "NEVER CHECK FOR UPDATES" and unticked the third party install box too, and upon several restarts I still have V.56.02 (fingers crossed it stays that way!). That was the key right there I think to make sure you tick "Never Check for Updates" and untick allow third party to install. But as another option, perhaps the person who unhooked from the internet to be sure all settings stayed put is also a solution to keep that from happening. :)
