In Options > General, I've always had 'When Firefox starts:' set to 'Show my windows and tabs from last time'. Recently however, on opening a new session, my apps have been lost - though not every time.

The Session Restore button is grayed out, and in the History menu, Restore Previous Session is grayed out.

App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data in the file sessionstore.js in the Firefox profile folder.

Make sure that you do not use Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox to clear the "Browsing History" when Firefox is closed because that prevails and prevents Firefox from opening tabs from the previous session.

It is also possible to use:

If you use cleanup software like CCleaner then make sure that Session is unchecked in the settings for the Firefox application.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

Oh dear - my naive phraseology shows here. By 'APPS NOT BEING RESTORED', I meant 'tabs not being restored'.

I don't use Clear Recent History.

Options > General > Startup: When Firefox Starts is set to 'Show my windows and tabs from last time'.

I don't use CCleaner, but do use TweakNow PowerPack 2011 SP1c. In the 'Clean Traces from Web Browser' part of this, offline cache files are deleted, but not 'cache files' or internet history.

I don't run it in Private Browsing mode.

I'm a bit simple with these things, so haven't explained the problems very well. A more detailed explanation is at https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/853820

It is the same issue.

If you use "Clear Recent History" to close the Browsing History or session data stored in the file sessionstore.js is removed otherwise then no tabs are restored in the next session and that includes normal tabs as well as App tabs and Tab Groups.
If there is nothing to restore from the file sessionstore.js then "Restore Previous Session" will be grayed and the button won't show on the about:home Home page.

I don't use Clear Recent History.

Restore Previous Session was grayed just now, with 8 tabs open. I've just closed FF (unpinned), then reopened it. All 8 tabs opened this time.

Try to use File > Exit Firefox to close Firefox and all open windows to avoid problems with session restore instead of clicking the close X on the title bar.
