I no longer see the padlock symbol when I am on a site that is usually encrypted, like my bank account. I rely on that symbol to know that I am safe. Is there a setting that I turned off by accident?

I tried and it works. Thank you very much!!

Actually the Site Identity Button is not new as of Firefox 5.0 as Xircal said as it has existed since Firefox 3.0

The padlock only shows that there is a secure connection and doesn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server. So you might still be connected to the wrong server if you make a typo in the URL and someone has claimed that mistyped URL. The functionality of the padlock has been replaced by the Site Identity Button on the left end of the location (address) bar.

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0/releasenotes/ What's New in Firefox 3.0 One-click site info: Click the site favicon in the location bar to see who owns the site and to check if your connection is protected from eavesdropping. Identity verification is prominently displayed and easier to understand. When a site uses Extended Validation (EV) SSL certificates, the site favicon button will turn green and show the name of the company you're connected to. (Try it here!)

You're welcome.

I can see how it is an upgrade. I need simplicity and familiarity though. Thank you for your explanation.
