how do I make the pages fill the whole screen (17") horizontally?
My computer is currently displaying websites with 4 inches of empty space on either side of the page. Isn't there a setting where I can have it fill the page ?

Try the Zoom, use keyboard Ctrl & - [control] key and the [-] minus key
