How do I make Firefox not dial up by itself?

I have dial up service. Sometimes I hang up Firefox, but leave a webpage visible so that I can make a telephone call based on a telephone number on the webpage. If a webpage is visible, Firefox repeatedly tries to re-establish connection. I'm constantly clicking the Cancel button to keep it from blurting tones into my telephone conversation. I would appreciate knowing how to defeat this. I want Firefox to dial only when I tell it to.

Thank you, cor-el. It seems like something out of those articles worked. I appreciate you pointing the right direction for me.
