I am getting error messages and problems. 1. On sending - first attempt usually fails - message 'Connection to Outgoing Server timed out' Second attempt generally successful. 2. On fetching mail about 60% of the time I get 'Connection to server pop.gmail timed out'. I sometimes need 3 or 4 attempts and occasionally need to restart T'bird. The settings must be OK as it does work in the end. Can anyone suggest what to do as it is extremely irritating. Thanks Nick

Check the settings in your Gmail account ... there is a security feature to allow 3rd party apps to access your email in there somewhere.

Check your settings for "Server Time Out" ... It should be greater than 1 minute.

If your Gmail accounts use POP3 (Or are not sure which you use) read this: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7104828

If your Gmail account is IMAP, Check These instructions: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1270102

Start Windows in safe mode and test TB performance. Timeouts often are caused by antivirus programs scanning email and secure connections. Safe mode bypasses these types of startup programs.
