I am testing with Palemoon and so on but for now I still have Firefox 28 and that is what I want. I did disable everything to prevent the automatic updating (Advanced / Updates / Never controle). In about:config is also says: app.update.service.enabled = false app.update.auto = false app.update.enabled = false app.update.silent = false Yet Firefox 29 keeps on being forced down my throat? Now again: I get a little pop-up saying that version 29.0.1 is available and downloaded. And when checking under Help / About Firefox it says I have to restart Firefox to do the update? And sure enough: I close Firefox 28 and start it again and it is updating to version 29. And this is not an incident: when searching for it, many people have the same problem. So, how to stop this forced update?

The vital point is Do not check with Help / about firefox and you will be ok.

That problem is something that is fixed in Firefox 29 but obviously you do not want to use firefox 29 so you do not get that fix.

  • Bug 600500 - About Dialog should check for updates automatically, but not install them if the pref "Ask me what I want to do" is set

There is going to be an effort to update the users accidentally stuck on old versions of Firefox but AFAIK even that respects users settings. ( I am not sure if part of that is already done,I know further changes are coming with another Firefox version ??Firefox32)

I will tag this question as escalate as it is likely to be rather an important question.

Ah ok, thanx! So the pop-up is just there to be ignored (or not). But as long as there is no Help / About check/action, there will be no update.

Yes I am expecting that to be the case.

I have older versions of Firefox installed for test and comparison purposes and am not noticing problems with them upgrading automatically and unexpectedly. I do not however run those continuously. I am also slightly unsure of timings and finer details of these efforts to up grade lost users.

Note the advice in this old article maybe of use if you do accidentally click the version check

  • Updates reported when running newest version_delete-update-configuration-files
  • Also presumably if you are for now staying on Fx28 (Against best advice) maybe you will have a copy of the full installer on the computer or elsewhere so that you do not need to redownload that every time.

And I know you are well aware of this but for the benefit of others

Not updating Firefox is usually considered bad practice.

Once a new Released out and security fixes are made and publicised bad guys take advantage of the exploits and that puts your System and Personal Data at an increased risk.
Those with strong reasons for using an insecure version and understanding the risks may take appropriate steps to mitigate the risk. Possibly using a Virtual Machine, maybe having a well rehearsed bare metal restore procedure.

Perhaps if you say why you do not wish to upgrade we may be able to suggest a suitable way forward with an upgrade and some sort of workaround. Or are you talking as an administrator of a network of Computers, in which case a special Release of Firefox may be more appropriate. If the problem relates to Firefox 29 these articles may help

It may also be worth noting that Fx29 now respects the setting to not upgrade until you agree. Firefox 28 upgraded regardless of the setting if you used the about dialogue to check the version.

Hi meegja, I am coming a little late to this forum, but John99 has good advice to update to the latest version. It is being encouraged to update because of the many security updates with this version.

This includes memory corruptions and Privileged Notifications more information can be seen Security updates

@ guigs2 I know, thanks :) But without wanting to start another discussion (I did that with this topic https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/998106 which is closed now after many views and votes), I am one of the many many people who refuse to go to FF29 because of numerous reasons of which amongst are the fact that it looks hideous, way less customizable in default state (have to use way more add-ons to get it the we want), feeling Mozilla is stabbing the users who made Firefox big, in the back with FF29, and so on. So still at FF28 until I find a good replacement and say goodbye to Firefox after using it from version 1 till now :(
