Inbox messages disappeared after Thunderbird update today
When I powered on my computer this morning, Thunderbird updated automatically.
It then opened on the Thunderbird Mail- Inbox screen, with an option to "read messages" or "write a new message", whereas it has always previously opened with a display of my inbox messages.
The column on the left shows that I have 10 unread messages, but I cannot access them, "Read messages" does nothing.

Sounds like what some other users are seeing
1. open tools | addons | extensions and remove Lightning/calendar addon 1a. if you can't get to addons, then start thunderbird in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode and try again) 1b. if you still can't get to addons, reinstall thunderbird from http://getthunderbird.com/ 2. restart thunderbird 3. reinstall Lightning/calendar addon - if you need the functionality
Please tell us, does that help?
Or, install the updated lightning addon 4.0.3.1 which came out this morning.
Please let us know your results. Thanks
The messages that were in my inbox are gone and I cannot get them back.
After installing update 38.6.0, the list of older messages in my inbox was in its usual place on the left side of my screen. However, none of them would open. Messages which came in after the update installation opened normally.
I went to Edit>Folder Properties and clicked on Repair Folder. At that point, the list of older messages in my Inbox disappeared.
Where did they go? Can they be restored?
All imap accounts? What addons are installed according to help | Troubleshooting? And which antivirus software do you use?
No, a POP account. No addons that I'm aware of. Panda Free antivirus.
Thanks, Dave
Can you post a screen shot please? see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-create-screenshot-my-problem
I followed the directions, but it will not create a screen shot.
After downloading the latest Thunderbird security update this morning -- 2/24/16 -- at the behest of Mozilla, I am now unable to open my inbox or sent messages or deleted messages or any other category. It just stays on the master page and won't budge no matter what I do. Windows 8.1 and Thunderbird 38.5.1-- although if I check properties for the Thunderbird .exe file it says 38.6.0. I am unable to use my email program at this point so any help will be greatly appreciated.
With Thunderbird stopped, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/kb/safe-mode
Then on the toolbar click and then click - disable all lightning addons you see. If that does not help, repeat above and disable all add-ons.

Wayne,
Perfect solution. I followed your instructions explicitly and everything returned to normal. Strange how something that simple (so to speak) can bring the whole program to a halt.
I can't thank you enough.
Sincerely, Roger
I followed the instructions, but my missing emails are still gone.
