Videos on the New York Times website will not play.

My system has gone haywire after the Windows 10 Anniversary update. Videos on other sites work properly. I do have an HTML5 plugin.

The problem might not have anything to do with Firefox, but I would appreciate your opinion on this.

Hi Fred

The Times has just come out with a personalized version of HTML5. I have been looking for their article and to pass on to you. This article was way over my head and ended with a help wanted notice for a software engineer.

As said before... this is way over my head.

I also have been having problems with my W10 (upgrade) system and my not being able to run videos on the times site may not have anything to do with Firefox. Thank you Ray

Generally speaking, if Firefox can handle H.264 on YouTube's test page, it can handle it on other sites using .mp4 media:

https://www.youtube.com/html5

Do you get five boxes blue, and the last one red?

As a test, you might disable all your video-related extensions to see whether Firefox can handle the site without them. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then you can selectively disable extensions on the right side (later, the disabled extensions will sort to the bottom).

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

At the beginning of this year, we officially turned off Flash support for VHS, the New York Times video player. We now use HTML5 video technology

Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla, Bla,

End of article.

I don't have Win 10. I called for more help. Good luck.

This is also my take on the article.

disabled all video and the problem is still there. This may not be a Firefox problem, but I hope I am wrong.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

Do you have the N version of Windows 10? as I have seen a Win10 ( using N versions) user not be able to play HTML5 videos after Anniversary update until the media pack was installed again.

For example https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53356

For everyone who offed suggestions, I want to thank you. The problem is probably in the OS rather than Firefox. Windows tech support is my next call.

Thanks again

Just had a thought. I can get out and talk to you people through Firefox but cannot get into any of the Microsoft support services because nobody outside of the Firefox browser will accept my log in credentials. Another clue that this is not a Firefox problem but the fault belongs to Microsoft.

That's strange. Do you use any security/private software at the system level that could be blocking password submissions??

Not that I can think of or search for. I did install Kaspersky Anti-Virus at about the same time. I made Kaspersky aware and they did a system check and did not find anything. Wouldn't a system level application also affect logins used within Firefox? I can log into my emails from within Firefox but not within Windows Live Mail. An odd thing is that I can use my Comcast accounts, but Comcast mail shows me logged in as a guest.
