This was true both now and in pre-quantum versions. It happened I believe starting with the last update before Quantum. When I click on some links (not from the search baror the location bar), I get a quick flash of a new tab but nothing happens. No linked page appears. The only solution is to copy the link location and then paste it in the location bar and click "paste and go".

And of course for some buttons, this will not work at all, so I can't connect with those features that ordinarily will open a new, small window.

It was suggested a while ago that it could be incompatible add-ons, and I should open in safe mode and disable all add-ons. But opening in safe mode seemed to cure the problem, so troubleshooting in that way wasn't going to tell me anything.

How do I restore the ability to link to new pages from an open page, using the links on that page?

Thanks.

Sometimes this can be caused by your protection programs or add-ons.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Safe websites. Is the problem still there?

Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried your suggestion to start in safe mode. When I did, the links operated properly as far as I could tell. So turning off add-ons one by one wouldn't have established anything.

If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing the problem by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

Close and restart Firefox after each change via one of these:

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit
