I accidentally disabled graphics on websites. How do I get them back?

more options

I have no idea what happened, but now I can't see images, icons, or buttons on message boards, most Google images search results, a favicon next to each seartch engine result (I have the addon for that; which used to work perfectly), or pictures where NFL.com's home page videos are. On message boards, avatars and icons are replaced with text links. Video locations are blank. These are still clickable - I just can't see the images.

I tried Safe Mode. That did not change anything. I don't have an image toggle button or menu item anywhere. Howe can I fix this?

Could you check the following permission setting. I don't know how this could get changed without using about:config --

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste perm and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If the permissions.default.image preference is bolded and "modified" or "user set" to 2 or 3, right-click it and click Reset to restore the default value of 1

After this change, you need to reload the page with missing images to see any effect.

For reference, the values mean:

  • 1 => Load images into the page from all servers
  • 3 => Load images into the page from the same server, but not others
  • 2 => Do not load images into the page from any server

Sounds like that is a site setting that changed not a Browser setting?

Could you check your color settings:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

Firefox 57+ In the search box at the top of the page, type color and Firefox should filter the page down so you can easily find the "Colors" button. Go ahead and click that.

Firefox 52 ESR In the left column, click Content and then on the right side, click the "Colors" button.

Try changing this setting:

"Override the colors specified by the page with your selections above"

Below that, it usually says

"Only with High Contrast themes"

Click that and change the setting to

"Never"

then click OK to finish the change.

Does that fix it?

Here's a screenshot of that part of the Colors dialog:

Two panels... I'm not sure what you're referring to.

If images are missing then check that you do not block images from some domains.

  • you can tap the Alt key or press the F10 key to show the hidden Menu Bar temporarily

check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab in "Tools -> Page Info -> Permissions".

Check "Tools -> Page Info -> Media" for blocked images

  • select the first image and use the cursor Down key to scroll through the list
  • if an image in the list is grayed and "Block Images from..." has a checkmark then remove this checkmark to unblock images from this domain

You can check preferences on the about:config page and make sure they have the default value.

  • permissions.default.image (1)
  • network.http.sendRefererHeader (2)

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content.

  • make sure your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version

There is Tracking Protection that can block (wanted) content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

My color override setting was already on Never.None of this happened when I installed AdBlock Ultimate, so I don't know why that would be a problem. Is it necessary to refresh Firefox?
