Hi,

I would like to know how I can upgrade my beta Thunderbird to the latest official Thunderbird (78.1 ?)? Do I simply download the 78.1 (64bit) build and then install that?

Obviously, I do not want to lose all my current mails.

Thanks in advance,

Van Opstal Jan

1. backup your profile, and do so on a regular basis https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile - first the profile that the beta install has been using whose name is probably either "default", or "default-beta" - you can find out which profile is being used and which profiles are defined by going to Help > Troubleshooting > about:profiles 2. download 78.1.0 using https://getthunderbird.com 3. install and run 78.1.0 - it will probably come up empty and ask to define your accounts - cancel the account definition 4. now you have a choice - a) shut down thunderbird and copy the data from the beta profile into the new profile created by the installation of 78.1.0, or b) force 78.1.0 to use the beta profile at help > troubleshooting > about:profiles ... if you encounter a dialog like the one seen at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/dedicated-profile-thunderbird-installation#w_what-happens-to-my-profile-if-i-downgrade-to-a-previous-version-of-thunderbird then you will need to use the downgrade switch described there 5. backup your profile again

Thanks. Upgrade done OK :)

Note: the installer just proposed 'Upgrade' and I selected that option and then it just went fine like that. (I did make a backup of my profile folder, just in case ;))

Which choice did you use for #4, and why?

The installer just proposed 'Upgrade' and I selected that option and then it just went fine like that. So I did not have to define any accounts (it took my existing account - which is the default).

That is unexpected. Did you install beta in a custom location, and the installer put 78.1 in that same location?

If not, please look at c:/program files and c:/program files (x86) - where is thunderbird beta and thunderbird 78.1 installed?

hi Wayne,

My Thunderbird is installed at:

 	C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe

For installation, I just downloaded the exe installer and executed it (then I took all default proposed values). Regs,

Jan

Note: I think the beta was also located in that folder.

In the past year(?) new beta installs started going to a program folder just for beta. So your answer suggests that either a) you installed your first beta prior to that date, or b) you installed beta after that date and used custom install to have it install at C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\ or c) something I haven't thought of.

In any case, thanks for the info. Enjoy version 78.
