I'm trying to install firefox 4 but when I try to start the application it says it's checking for add on compatibility but gets stuck at that screen and freezes. Any ideas what I need to do. I've reinstalled 3.6 until I get this figured out.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

I have this same problem too. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit deskptop, 3.2 ghz quadcore AMD processor, 4GB of RAM, computer is less then 6 months old. I have tried several things and nothing works. Unless I see something being done about this, I will just stay at version 3 and maybe check out Chrome for a good working browser to use full time. This is not a good sign for this new browser version.

Creating a new profile solved the problem.

I had originally cleared my cache. Then I tried all kinds of stuff.

Today I cleared the cache. And I cleared all of the cookies....

Presto!!! I'm golden.

This perfectly did the trick for me (note that I've manually cleared the cookies, not just from the ctrl+shift+delete prompt, as that didn't clear them oddly enough). I've had the same issue as described in this thread with upgrading from FF3.6 to FF8, after clearing the cache and cookies the upgrade went through well.
