I updated my Java on my Win. 7 to run a live streaming. I got the missing plug-in error message and the new java blocked me. Now i exhumed all the places that i could have thought of, and none worked so far. I searched Q/A here , went to java.com, checked my Adds-On, restarted my laptop, checked for security on java in control panel..etc.

The original java 6 under Sun-micro System is still on the prog. file which has been there for 2 yrs. (never interfered with the other version prior to 7), and has nothing to do with the java 7 from Oracle. I need help and some straight forward and concrete instructions to resolve this issue. thx.

What do you have listed in the Plugins section of the Add-ons page? You are looking for Java (TM) Platform SE 7 (followed by a version number). Can you find it among the disabled plugins toward the bottom of the page, or is it missing completely?

One reason Java might be missing completely is if it not enabled for browsers. You can check here:

Windows Control Panel > Programs category > Java (32-bit)

On the Security tab, there is a checkbox to enable Java to run in web browsers. (Screen shot)

The forum software detected your Firefox as version 10. Is that correct?

Version 10 is not secure; Mozilla discloses security flaws after each new release. Is something holding you back from upgrading to Firefox 26? Please let us know so we can suggest solutions or workarounds.

If Help > About Firefox shows Firefox 26.0, you may need to clear the preference that is misreporting your version number. See: How to reset the default user agent on Firefox.

To see whether Java is installed in the location that Firefox checks for it, can you open this folder:

64-bit Win: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\plugin2\
32-bit Win: C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\plugin2\

The plugin file is named npjp2.dll

If the DLL file is where it should be and still not showing up on the Add-ons page, check the following:

(1) Confirm that Firefox is scanning the registry for plugins

Firefox finds the Java plugin from a registry entry. Some users have the scanning turned off for some reason. Here's how to check and fix that:

(A) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(B) In the filter box, type or paste scan and pause while the list is filtered

(C) If plugin.scan.plid.all is not set to its default value of true, double-click it to toggle it back to the default.

If you changed this setting, exit and restart Firefox to trigger another scan.

If you check the Add-ons page again, success?

If Firefox is set to scan but still does not find Java and list it on the Add-ons page...

(2) Remove Firefox's plugin registry file

Sometimes the pluginreg.dat file becomes corrupted. You can remove it and have Firefox re-scan for plugins. As a side effect, any plugins you have disabled on the Add-ons page probably will be re-enabled, so you'll need to go back to that page one more time.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit (either Firefox button > Exit or File menu > Exit)

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename pluginreg.dat to something like pluginreg.old

Restart Firefox. (If you want to restore your previous non-private session, use History > Restore Previous Session.)

When you return to the Add-ons page, is Java finally there?

Edit: Added expected path for 32-bit Windows

I Restore my system to the prior date....and then downloaded Java 7. That resolved the issue. Thanks all.
