I have Shockwave Flash add on (latest update). I have it set to "always activate" - but on a Firefox restart, it reverts to "never activate" and no videos can be played. I can rest it to "always activate" and it works fine until - I stop Firefox then start - the add on once again reverts to disabled. For some reason Firefox does not remember it's setting and I have to set it every time Firefox starts. Any clues?

From your System Details, it looks like user.js is currently active in Firefox. The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there.

You can delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release. You can get to the profile folder below:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory > Show Folder

or

  • Go to about:support and click Show Folder next to Profile Directory.

Thanks for your note.

I have gone into the Profile Directory folder and see the following -

Under the main script file "Prefs", I see a prefs.js.BAK file. Under "User" script file I find a User.js.BAK file.

Are you saying I should delete or rename both of these files to disable them and this will automatically revert the profile to Firefox default? and hopefully solve the problem?

If you find a user.js file, delete it. If you find a prefs.js file, delete that as that will remove any set prefs by user.js

You should also try Safe Mode to see if any of your extensons are causing htis

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (orange Firefox button, top left corner (The image "new fx menu" does not exist. for v29+)/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: orange Firefox button, top left corner (The image "new fx menu" does not exist. for v29+)/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
  • Windows/Mac: Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
  • Linux: Run firefox -safe-mode in the Terminal/Konsole

Nothing makes any difference - it just does not run unless set after start and it is disabled after FF shutdown every time,

If you have software like Advanced SystemCare that might reset some files to older versions to protect these files against changes then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
