'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > Composition' > 'Spelling' tab
Language: allows you to select from a list of various already installed dictionaries.
click on 'Download More Dictionaries' click on OK
A new tab will open in Thunderbird locate the language and click on 'Download dictionary'
You can see what 'Dictionaries you have downloaded and whether they are enabled: 'Menu icon' > 'Add-ons' select the 'Dictionaries' icon - usually the one at the bottom - icon looks like an orange book with a tick on it.

Thank you so much. I was tearing my hair out because my spelling is not too good.
