Eudora to Thunderbird
with the current changes to Gmail, its finally time for me to upgrade from Eudora to Thunderbird. I've read through some of the prior questions, googled the issues with Gmail and have come back here. what must I do to migrate Eudora to Thunderbird smoothly.
will I still have the mailboxes that I have in Eudora, what about the numerous email accounts I am now using with Eurdora?
thanks in advance
Steve

Assuming Eudora is on your PC, I suggest doing web search for Eudora 8 (built on Thunderbird and sorta' looks like it) and install it. That does an excellent job of importing earlier Eudora versions and creating a good profile for Thunderbird. Then install Thunderbird to use the new profile.
and what happens to everything I now have in the Eudora I have now?
Eudora 8 is an early version of Thunderbird with full import capability to import your email and addressbook. Once that is done, you can download and install the current version of Thunderbird. And maybe I don't understand what you're asking.
ok, I have downloaded Eudora 8 and have Eudora 7 on this computer, where should I install Eudora 8, so I have the info I have on Eudora 7. profiles, mailboxes etc.....it also looks like Eudora 8 is using imap instead of pop.......thanks your help.
Eudora 8 is Thunderbird. it is Thunderbird 3 with an addon called Penelope. As any download of Eudora 8 will come from an unknown source I would not recommend it. It certainly does not have any import features that were not in Thunderbird at the time.
If your Eudora is still running, then windows will contain the appropriate registry key to find your Eudora messages and contacts. Thunderbird will import the data, that is make a copy, so your Eudora "profile" will not be changed in any way.
Eudora 8 can use POP or IMAP. Just install normally, as it can run along with Eudora 7. Have Eudora 7 NOT running at the time. Eudora 8's import feature can import the messages and create a proper TB profile.
thanks, Matt what do you think about this when it comes to converting?

I think why use an external package to do what Thunderbird can do? Unless your Eudora store is chronically full of rubbish. Something Eudora was exceedingly tolerant of simply import into Thunderbird usding inbuilt import is the better approach.
thank you, the Eudora to Thunderbird didn't go very well......its almost like I'm starting all over with Thunderbird. I have created Personalities, Folders for each Gmail account, the mailbox, Mbx will come later. I have one Gmail account which is not getting, downloading current Gmail email. its going back to 2007. could this be something in my settings? any ideas??
thank you

Well, I'm willing to learn from this. Matt has forgotten more than I will ever know about TB. Eudora 8 was designed to provide a transition path for Eudora 7 and imports all mail folders and subfolders in one click and addressbook in a second click. Admittedly, clicking 'repair folder' is needed to ensure all messages are viewable. I then imported profile directly into TB. I still plan to recommend it, but if Steve reports that it was a simple process, I'll need to rethink my view. Thanks.
thank you, trying this again........the Eudora to Thunderbird didn't go very well......its almost like I'm starting all over with Thunderbird. Eudora 8 does it in one click. That's all I know.
