ff 17esr hangs on download after update from ff 10esr
I am running Firefox 10 esr on XP with quite a bunch of extensions. Recently I went to update to the recommended ff 17esr. I also successfully updated my extensions and everything seemed to be fine. Alas, when I tried to start a download firefox just stopped responding and I had to kill the process. After restarting ff I tried to download something else but the same effect occured.
I followed the steps on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding but they did not help. I had a working environment with esr 10 and all my extensions successfully updated to esr 17. Clearing download history, changing download folders or virusscan options did not help and are obviously not the cause of the hanging.
Fortunately I am using FEBE to keep a backup of everything so I was able to revert back to esr 10 and everything was working again.
Any clues what is going on here? What can I do to make sure I get a successful update to FF 17esr?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
If it works in Windows Safe mode then you have a problem with other software, likely security software or a system driver, that is running on your computer.
Make sure that you have the latest updates of your security software and major hardware drivers.
