We have a firewall in the office that blocks all internet access, I can open it up to whitelist certain IP blocks or domain names.

I need to find out either the IP range or domain name(s) of the firefox update servers.

(so users with firefox installed will be able to automatically have their updates applied)

I've googled every search term I can think of but haven't found a solution.

Running an in house firefox update server is overkill for this small office and it's also a windows only shop.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Try this:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste update and pause while the list is filtered

The value corresponding to app.update.url is the one used to check for program update, but other URLs are used for extension update checking, blocklist updates, and so forth. You could try filtering on http then clicking the "Value" column heading to sort those fields alphabetically, then scroll down to where the http URLs start. The purpose should be reasonably clear or guessable from the name of the preference in the left column but, if not, feel free to ask.

It just occurred to me that even though app.update.url is the server used to check for updates, the actual update might come from an FTP server. There really should be some documentation on this...

You most likely get redirected to a random server for load balancing if there is an update available, so it probably isn't possible to white-list a specific IP range to download updates.

You can use the Live Http Headers to see which URL is contacted to check for updates (use Help > About to do a check).

You should see something like this
