I "upgraded" to Catalina from High Sierra and Firefox now crashes and won't reopen because it says I already have another copy open when there is not other copy

Catalina (10.15.3) and Firefox (73.0.1) aren't working together. As soon as I stop actively using Firefox it crashes. If I try to reopen it, I get a message that I can't reopen it because there is a copy in use already. If I try to force quit Firefox it is not in the force quit menu. If I look in Activity Monitor Firefox is not present there either. Thank you.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

It seems as though Catalina does not want Firefox on my iMac.

First, I couldn't even download Firefox from the Firefox website. I tried the English version 10 times but it would never fully download and just hangs at 69.3MB which is the size of the file but it never competes the process. I then tried the Canadian English version and that worked. Then I tried English version again and it finally worked but only right after I did the Canadian English version.

But when I go to install the English Firefox version, I drag it over to the applications folder it never copies. It says copying and never does even if you wait for several hours it stays with the circle showing progress at no progress. I tried it 10 different times on fresh reboots, etc. But Firefox just won't copy to my applications folder or any folder. I then have to force quit Finder and move the Firefox icon that shows no progress copied to the trash then empty trash, which then crashes the trash when I try to empty Firefox from it. So I have to force quit trash and then Firefox is not in the trash. Then we start the cycle again.

If I click on control and eject it says it can't because it is in use.

The last curious item is that no matter when I download Firefox it says 2/17/20 and not todays date.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Hi BLINK:

I use OS XCatalina on two Macs with Firefox 73 and have no issues. My guess is you have malware or some other low level software or hardware issue? I'd recommend scanning with Mac anti-malware software such as Malware bytes: https://www.macworld.com/article/3263722/best-antivirus-for-mac.html

Cheers!
