I've used TB for years w/no problem. Today I go to download new messages and it's trying to download 9000+ emails, all OLD (from 2010!). How do I stop this?

I just want to check my email after the weekend....and I can see on my iPhone that I have received some, but not 9000!....but it's trying to download 9000+ messages that are OLD (i.e. from 2010, 2011)....why? And how do I stop it? (My ISP is Comcast, which I've also had for at least 6 years.) I've tried shutting it down and restarting it...still doing it. Please help!

POP. And there are 9,000+ emails on the Comcast server, which it says is only 20% of the 10GB of storage I get....but it's as if Thunderbird thinks I've never read/downloaded any of those messages before. Argh!
