When I try to view my inbox using Thunderbird via your IMAP mail server the messages I get are: 1. In response to "Mail Server Password Required"

  "Enter your password for david@dcbtutors.co.uk@mail.gandi.net"
  I enter my password.

2. Thunderbird reports various activities (bottom left corner of window) finishing with "Sending authenticate login information..." and "Sending login information..." 3. A new popup appears "Login Failed"

"Login to server mail.gandi.net failed." with options to Retry, Enter New Password or Cancel

4. Retry just loops back to Login Failed popup 5. Enter New Password permits re-entry of correct password with "Mail Server Password Required" popup. Server settings are: Server Type: IMAP Mail Server Server Name: mail.gandi.net Port: 993 User Name: david@dcbtutors.co.uk

SMTP settings are similar with Port 465 SSL/TSL are set for both incoming and outgoing mail.

All I get is that the login failed yet I can access the mail via your webmail (Roundcube) so I know the password and username are correct.

Ok, apparently you have the bull by the horns here and we need to backup a bit.

Did you create a mail account with Ghandi? That is did you give them your US$39. I hope not as it looks to me like you already have a mail account to add with dcbtutors.co.uk.

That is done through adding an existing mail account. File menu (alt+F) > New >existing mail account or clicking on the "Skip this and use my existing email"' in the get a new account dialog.

When adding an account do not include any of @mail.gandi.net it has no relevance to your existing mail account and is really messing things up.

So lets start by Going to Tools menu (alt+T) > account settings and using the account actions button at the bottom to delete what you have created.

Now add your existing account using the File menu (alt+F) > New >existing mail account menu option.

Input your dcbtutors.co.uk email address and work through the wizard.

Is that better?

Many thanks for looking at this problem for me Matt. I created the mail account on the back of a Gandi domain name purchase. The issue is that when I use the wizard, I get a warning triangle by the password with the message "User name or password invalid". Below this it says "Configuration could not be verified - is the user name or password wrong?" I know I have entered the correct password as it was used and works with Gandi's Roundcube web mail app. The user name entered is david@dcbtutors.co.uk. When I then go to the inbox, this is when I then get the issues with Login Failed. I've been round and round with this trying different combinations of user name to try and get it working but to no avail. The Gandi server just will not accept the login credentials. I tried it on Outlook too and got the same problem.

That error is most likely coming from your security software blocking Thunderbirds attempts for connect to the internet, try Windows safe mode (which disabled most security stuff and see if t works.)

Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

Thanks Matt, unfortunately this did not solve the issue. I already have my @me.com account loaded into TB and this is working fine - no problems with security settings etc. I have got my Gandi account (dcbtutors) added as well but cannot load mail as the login to mail.gandi.net is refused.

Hi Matt, following further investigation it appears that TB elides my username (david@dcbtutors.co.uk) with the server name (mail.gandi.net) and this may be why the login is failing. How can I prevent this happening so that the login only sends my username (and password)? Regards David

I don't see any mention of your dcbtutors.co.uk account there. Who is this provided by? Do they not operate a server themselves?

Hi Zenos, the email account is provided by Gandi - as recommended by TB - on the back of a domain name purchase. Thanks for looking David

Ah! It's your own domain? It appears to have been successfully registered with gandi

I use an arrangement myself which might be similar to yours. I rent a domain from a UK registrar and webhost who offers with it a suite of email accounts, but they are under the registrar's own domain. To make use of my "nice" email address I have to use a dns redirector to map messages sent to my "nice" email address onto a real email account, for which I use the webhost's "ugly" email accounts. For sending, I use my ISP's smtp server, which (like most) doesn't care that I'm using a "foreign" from: address when sending using my nice email address.

So, in Thunderbird, the pop/imap login uses the ugly username to connect to the ugly email account on the webhost's server, but the email address associated with this account is of course my nice email address. If your set-up works at all like mine, you may have to do the same; use the gandi address/username and password to connect to the server, but insert the dcbtutors.co.uk address into the email address box in the account settings. It looks like gandi are already doing the redirect bit themselves, because they have connected their nameservers with the dcbtutors domain.

My account is always something of a trial, and has offered similar resistance to being added to phones and tablets. Some clients do it well, others make it hard work. Thunderbird at least differentiates between email account address and username, which in my case, are NOT the same thing. Some email clients don't offer this separation, or do but make it awkward to set up.

Thanks Zenos, This also does not seem to work unless I am being completely thick. Gandi offers this information:

You'll need to ask your primary DNS provider (usually your web host) to change the zone for this primary server. That is to say, edit the MX record according to your zone:

@ 10800 IN MX 10 spool.mail.gandi.net. @ 10800 IN MX 50 fb.mail.gandi.net. You can then check your mails via mail.gandi.net and configure your e-mail client with help from our tutorials.

If you wish to use your usual e-mail client with the appropriate values for your domain (which isn't necessary, or useful, in 90% of cases), you'll need to add the following records at your web host:

pop 10800 IN CNAME access.mail.gandi.net. imap 10800 IN CNAME access.mail.gandi.net. smtp 10800 IN CNAME relay.mail.gandi.net. webmail 10800 IN CNAME agent.mail.gandi.net.

Should I speak to my ISP to get this sorted and will it mess up all my other email connections?

Regards David
