I don't think I am confusing any of this, it's just that my wife's works site will not accept Shockwave in place of Flash Player so I guess I need to reiterate my original question. Can I force Firefox to accept Flash Player instead of Shockwave?

You might try looking at the page accessed by "about:addons" in the URL field. Perhaps one of these controls will help.

I've tried everything that has been suggested and nothing seems to work. Also I cannot get Java 7 to load on my iMac and place a control panel where I can find it. The control panel is not in the Utilities folder and when I click on the System Prefs and then go to Java I get a dialogue stating the Java opens in it’s own control panel, which I cannot find anywhere on my Mac. Some sites open OK and work but one on Firefox will not open and I get a yellow bar across the top that says another add on is need to view this page, (My wife needs this page to work and so far I have to start up in Windows for that to happen). The site that needs the Java says to just click the message off with the x in upper right and you should be good to go, but it doesn’t work.

If the Shockwave Flash plugin is enabled on the Tools > Add-ons > Plugins page then a visit to the Adobe test page should confirm that Flash is installed and working.
