Address Book Search allows no typing in its window; how can I fix this?
From the Address Book window I select Search Addresses... from the Edit drop-down menu. I then see the window as shown in http://en.flossmanuals.net/thunderbird/address-book-basics/# but it won't accept any typing.

Gosh. I don't think I've ever used that particular search window in the Address Book.
However, it works fine here (TB31.3.0), so it seems it's not fundamentally broken.
Could you please try Thunderbird in Safe Mode to check there's no add-on incompatibility?

T a for that. OK - I'm in Safe Mode. Same problem. I only recently installed Thunderbird and imported my old OE address book. I have no entries in the two system books.
Do you see all the addresses as you'd expect in the imported address book? Imports often put email addresses into the wrong field, but I have no experience of whether or if this affects this particular search window.
Can you search successfully from the search/filter window at top right of the address book itself?
Can you search successfully from the search/filter window at top right of the address book itself? - Yes
Do you see all the addresses as you'd expect in the imported address book? - Yes & no. All the fields seem to have been imported all right. I can see them for an individual. Also, I can see them all when I export the address book to a csv file. BUT I can't properly see them in the main window of the address book.
When I click the odd-looking icon (a book with an arrow?) at the top of the vertical slider, I get a list of only 13 fields. I can display, hide and rearrange these fields. But I cannot see how to access any of the other fields in the address book.
Double-click an entry to see its "card".

As I wrote, I can do this. I would prefer to have different fields visible in the main window of the address book. This however looks like a different problem, although it's something that can easily be done in Outlook Express.
BTW I'm also using 31.3.0
