Library Bookmarks is different from Bookmarks bar, how do I fix this?
When i click the star icon on the url bar, it adds the site to my bookmarks folder under library but no under the bookmarks bar. How do I get them to be the same without manually adding the site to both?

If you want to change the default location from Other Bookmarks to Bookmarks Toolbar to save clicking that every time, there is an add-on for that:
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-bookmark-folder/

When you click the star on the location/address bar then you create a new bookmark in the Other Bookmarks folder. Bookmarks that appear on the Bookmarks Toolbar should be in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder, so you would have to click the highlighted star and move the bookmark to the correct folder or move the bookmark in the Bookmarks Manager (Library). You can of course do this while the pop-up is still open when you create the bookmark.

I have something NEW going on. I have been using Firefox for 25 years and have never seen this but it may be a new feature? If it is I do not like it and want to STOP IT. The normal way to save a bookmark it by using CTRL+D but when I do it now it saves a link to the "Library" the one with the symbol of |||\ but not to the regular bookmarks. IF I save it twice then the first time it is saved to the "Library" and the second time I do it then it saved to the regular "Bookmarks".
I DO NOT WANT to have to do this TWO TIMES, and I do not want it being saved to the LIBRARY and to the BOOKMARKS. I am old fashioned and like doing it the SAME WAY I have been doing it for 25 years...
Mozilla support is TERRIBLE! Every time I have a problem I have to look for HOURS to find the solution or I CANNOT find any solution, so I have to completely GIVE UP! ! ! ! ! AND hope that the issue is FIXED in a later release.
MAYBE it is time to give up on Firefox?

Hi LacyRonald, this is what should happen when you press Ctrl+d:
(1) Firefox drops a panel from the star icon at the right end of the address bar
If this panel doesn't drop automatically, click the star when it's blue and look for this checkbox:

(2) By default, the destination of a new bookmark is the Other Bookmarks folder.
Firefox's generic confirmation message refers to "the Library" but there is no separate Library folder.
If you want the default destination folder for a new bookmark to be Bookmarks Menu, you can use the add-on referenced earlier in this thread.
To have a more traditional experience, I suggest adding the optional Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar -- it looks like . To add that button, either:
(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar
(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?
- Click the "Library" button:
- Click "Bookmarks"
- Click "Bookmarking Tools"
- Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
Hi jscher2000, I appreciate your HELP, Yes I know that NORMALLY, "(1) Firefox drops a panel from the star icon at the right end of the address bar".
This problem ONLY started 3 days ago so I thought that it might be a new feature in Firefox?? IF it got turned ON by accident then there must be a SIMPLE why to turn it ON, and a SIMPLE way to turn it OFF?? OR some other program or malware turned it on?? Maybe they have a way of capturing what bookmarks we save by doing this????
You said, "If you want the default destination folder for a new bookmark to be Bookmarks Menu, you can use the add-on referenced earlier in this thread." So I HAVE TO USE an add-on to make this to STOP??
Based on what I read in the 'Thread' last night I have already tried adding the "Bookmarks Menu" icon to my Bar and it did not change anything. So I then tried deleting the "Library" icon and that also did not change anything? I STILL have a bookmark saved to the library.
You also said, "To have a more traditional experience, I suggest ADDING the optional Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar -- it looks like ---. To add that button, either...(do the following)." It was THAT last night when I began reading your POST and others regarding this issue, and like I said adding and/or deleting either icon makes no differences at all, to the issue of having to save it TWICE to actually get it saved into the "Traditional" bookmark saved. I really believe that this was caused by MALWARE or a hacker, doing their dirty deeds??
WHATEVER caused it I really NEED it to STOP!! It is a pain to have to save a bookmark TWICE so that the second time it ACTUALLY gets saved when and where "I want' it to be saved, in the Dropdown "Bookmarks Menu"!

Hi LacyRonald, did you confirm that the box to show the editor is checked?
You need the add-on to make the initial default folder anything other than Other Bookmarks.
I think I am having the same problem and have been experiencing it for several months! I question if during the last "update" something was changed. I never had bookmark saved to a library before.
Now when I am on a web page and want to 'bookmark' it I go up to the toolbar and click "Bookmarks" and go to "bookmark this page" OR control D it is now saved to library. Then the problem is I cannot find the library or the bookmark I saved.
Hi NJNEJN, "Library" is a non-specific term. It confirms that the bookmark was saved to your bookmarks. By default, new bookmarks are saved to "Other Bookmarks."
If Firefox does not drop the panel to choose a folder:
Click the star when it's blue and look for this checkbox:

If you prefer to initially save bookmarks to a different folder:
You can install this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-bookmark-folder/
NJNEJN YES Firefox sent me a message a few days ago that they were changing HOW and WHERE our bookmarks are saved...
IT IS UNBELIEVABLE how everyone is supposedly improving things but instead they make everything WORSE!!
Sorry I cannot find that message now! But I do remember that it said something about how Bookmarks would be saved, and it sounded like EVERYTHING about bookmarks would be totally different, but I do not remember WHEN it was supposed to start?
BTW I did get my problem fixed, but I do not remember exactly HOW I did it? I tried doing what 'jscher2000' suggested:
- Click the "Library" button: it looks like |||\
- Click "Bookmarks"
- Click "Bookmarking Tools"
- Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"
THAT did not work the first time? Eventually I REMOVED the "Library" button from my toolbar and left the "Bookmarks" icon on the toolbar. It still did not work but the next time I used Firefox it DID WORK the old way and NOT save it to the "Library". I think that after you make those changes you need to EXIT Firefox and restart it??
NJNEJN To MAKE these changes you can also go into the OPEN MENU (far right) you should see 3 lines on top of each other, something like a large equal sign but with 3 lines instead of 2. CLICK on that and you will see a list of about 18-20 options, about half way down, this popup menu, you should see "Library", "Add-ons", "Options" and "Customize", choose "Customize", Then you will see all of the Toolbar icons that you can use. DRAG & DROP the Bookmark Icon to your Toolbar - it looks like a STAR with a line under it DRAG that to your Toolbar and remove the "Library" icon from your Toolbar, then EXIT. Run Firefox again and it should work the OLD NORMAL way...

THIS IS NOT what NJNEJN and I were having a problem with. At least that is not what I was trying to do. I was fine when it worked to old original way of CTRL+D and then having the Drop Down menu showing and giving me the option of WHERE I wanted to same it.
THE OLD normal way of saving bookmarks had changed for some reason and the DROP DOWN MENU BOX was no longer showing up? The old NORMAL way of CTRL+D did not show the DROP DOWN Panel... and I know that I had NOT changed anything? I think it was one of Firefox's MANY updates that had changed it.
I eventually got mine fixed but changing what icons showed on the Toolbar made no difference, at least it did not the first time I tried that Eventually it did WORK but now I do not remember HOW? Maybe I did do what you suggested, "Click the star when it's blue and look for this checkbox:" and then by clicking on the box for "Show editor when saving", that sounds like what needs to be done, but I did not understand that at the time I was trying to change everything.
But BOTTOM LINE with your suggestions I eventually got it fixed. I think that THROWING in that thing about installing an ad-on to change the DEFAULT FOLDER only confused things. I have so MUCH STUFF coming at me lately (in 7-8 other fields) it is just OVERLOAD!!!

I am back - tried your suggestions and they worked! Thank you for the help. Turns out I have quite a list of web sites bookmarked. Now I have to learn how to organize all these bookmarks into folders. Have suggestions on where to find the instructions?
We ran Internet Explorer for years and just switched to FF about a year and half ago after I.E. was no longer supported. I.E. was so much easier to organize once the bookmarks were saved. I could move them around, sort, change the same of the folder etc. Firefox seems to be rather complicated!
Thanks again -- appreciate your help
Hi NJNEJN, the easiest place to create folders and move bookmarks is the "Library" window. You can open that using either:
- Ctrl+Shift+b (or on Mac: Command+Shift+b)
- "Show All Bookmarks"
The left column shows the 3 main categories: bookmarks toolbar, bookmarks menu, other bookmarks. You can expand those to show the folders. The actual bookmarks in that category/folder are shown on the right side.
Hi NJNEJN, Since you used to run Microsoft IE I presume you are on a PC, is that correct?
The easiest way to get into the 'Bookmarks' (aka 'Library) page is follow jscher2000's tip CTRL+SHFT+B
If you prefer to use a mouse the other way to get into the BOOKMARKS page are as follows: IF you have the Drop Down" menu VISIBLE? That is the one that will shows -
'File' 'Edit' 'View' 'History' 'Bookmarks' 'Tools' 'Help'
across the top of your screen. You can click on 'Bookmarks' and then click on 'Show all bookmarks'.
Once your in the Bookmarks/Library page look at the left column and as jscher2000 said you will normally see 4 main entries: 'History', 'Downloads', 'Tags', and 'Bookmarks Toolbar' Right click on 'Bookmarks Toolbar' you will then have a popup menu that gives you lots of options such as: 'Open All in Tabs', 'New Bookmark..', 'New Folder..', etc., etc.
Whatever folders you create under 'Bookmarks Toolbar' will show up in your 'Toolbar' on the main browser page.
I put all of my "MAIN Categories" here under the 'Bookmarks Toolbar' and then they show up in my 'Toolbar', AFTER THAT I then added more folders in each of those. You can stack the folders as deep as you want to. I have literally HUNDREDS of bookmarks so I probably have at least a hundred different folders or more.
