I can receive emails but cannot send them and keep getting the following message: Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.1and1.com timed out. Try again.

Is this a question about Thunderbird?
If that is the case then we can move the question over to Thunderbird support.
SMTP is an email protocol. Firefox doesn't do email, it's strictly a web browser.
If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.
If your problem is with Mozilla Thunderbird, let us know and we can move this thread to the Thunderbird queue. This question currently is in the Firefox queue for answers.

From where do you send the emails?
Do you have a web page open in Firefox or are you using another application?
